Description
In 1929, C.D. Waggoner, a small, mild-mannered bank president from the mountain town of Telluride, Colorado, was prosecuted in federal court for the theft of half a million dollars from six of New York's most prominent banks. The robery was slick, an almost sleight-of-hand caper, and it was billed, at the time, as "the heist of the century." The fact of Waggoner's guilt was never in question. His motives, however, were vigorously disputed and remain, to this day, a matter of speculation. Why would a man who had faithfully served his community for thirty years, suddenly sacrifice his reputation, career and family life, and then make virtually no effort to cover his tracks. For many, Waggoner was a hero - a modern day Robin Hood, stealing from the rich Wall Street banks to give to his struggling, small town depositors.
